Unexpectedly, gorilla Bokito from Diergaarde Blijdorp passed away on Tuesday, April 4th. He had not been feeling well since last Sunday. On Monday, his feces were examined, and he was observed more closely. On Tuesday, there was still no improvement in his situation. Therefore, it was decided to further investigate and administer fluids under anesthesia. He passed away during the anesthesia. The cause is not yet known, and further investigation will be carried out. The gorilla group is deeply affected by this event. There is also a sense of shock among the staff, particularly the caretakers.
Bokito was born on March 14, 1996, in Zoo Berlin. In 2005, he came to Diergaarde Blijdorp as part of the European breeding program. In 2007, Bokito made headlines worldwide when he escaped from his enclosure. Bokito fathered ten offspring and developed into a social family man over the years. He also accepted a foster son, Nasibu, which is quite unusual among gorillas. He brought peace to the group and created a safe environment for all family members.
