Go on a maternity visit to the Sumatran jaybirds. The pair of jaybirds in the aviary near the Asia House came to Blijdorp last year. The aviary has been redesigned and planted. And now provided good results. The healthy chick is a first for Blijdorp. The birds can sing beautifully.
Because it is a sought-after cage bird in Indonesia and Sumatra, many birds are captured from the forests and traded on the illegal market. The Sumatran jaybird played a leading role in the EAZA campaign Silent Forest. With the proceeds of that campaign, a breeding center for this species will be established in Indonesia.
