Blacknose sharks born

In Rotterdam Zoo, blacknose sharks were born in the Oceanium. This shark species is rarely kept in aquariums and births are very special. During the previous birth in 2020, which was a world first at the time, a lot of knowledge was gained. The result is that there are now three healthy blacknose sharks swimming in Blijdorp!

We knew the female was pregnant and took all kinds of precautions. That’s why we were early enough to separate the young from the mother. After birth, the young are not safe because there is no natural bond between mother and young. We are proud of these special births. The young are kept behind the scenes and are well monitored. Although this shark species is not endangered, we are gaining experience that can later be used in the breeding of endangered sharks.
