Bathing elephants

The elephants like to cover themselves with a layer of mud. This protects them against the bright sun and against parasites that occur more often in the summer. The moisture from the mud evaporates on the skin, which also provides cooling. That is why the elephants always have access to a mud bath in the summer. In addition, the elephants are showered twice a day on hot days. If they are still warm, they splash in the bath. Totally covered with only the trunk as a snorkel. Delicious! Visitors can also relax in the Diergaarde with the many shady spots under the trees, on the terraces and in the cool Oceanium, for example.
